Dear St. Joseph Families,
October-December can be a very, very busy time of year. Practices, games, and rehearsals fill up our schedule to the point we feel like we should be charging a fare. We may find ourselves spending more time having supper from a paper bag than at the supper table. My advice, then, is finding the quality time with our children when we cannot get the quantity of time that we desire.

Ask very directed questions that may give you the answers you are looking for. Instead of If you ask, “How was your day?” you are going to receive the reply, “Good.” Try asking, “What was the best part of your day?” If you get the typical “I don’t know.” follow up with simply saying, “Well, I will give you time to think about it. Academics are important and being a student is a child’s “job” at this age so probe a little there. Ask them what tests are coming up and how- not if- you can help them prepare. These conversation starters will make your short amount of time together more meaningful.

Screen time is always something we as parents must manage. We have heard about all of the studies regarding screen time and social media. Review your child’s report card. Looking at the grades, there could be a direct correlation between the grades he or she earned and the amount of time on a screen. This will also allow you time to ask questions about conversations your child is having in group texts, on video games, and (heavy sigh) social media. Quality time with mom and/or dad can be way more rewarding than a screen or a blue light.

A quick reminder! If you are coming to the 9:30 Mass/Parish Picnic this weekend, please be sure to RSVP so that there is enough food and to wear your school uniform or spirit shirt as requested. We hope to see you then! St. Joseph, pray for us.
