Dear St. Joseph Families,
As we make our way to the conclusion of Mardi Gras, we are preparing for a very important holy season in the life of the Church. The season of Lent will begin on Ash Wednesday. The Church has determined that the observance of lent trumps the celebration of St. Valentine’s feast. Do not worry, we will permit our students to enjoy the celebration of St. Valentine on Thursday, February 15th. Why such an emphasis for us? Living according to the liturgical calendar is something that is a priority at any Catholic school. While observing the feasts of the saints is of great importance, we unify ourselves with the entire Church throughout the world by placing a priority of this observance.
The season of Lent is a time for all of us to pray, fast, and give alms. At SJS, our students will participate in a number of activities throughout the holy season. We will collect items for the poor through our Mini Vinnies. Be on the lookout for items being collected every week. Our students will pray the stations of the cross in the church during religion classes and after Mass on Wednesday. On Holy Thursday, we will see our 8th graders perform the Living Stations. It is always a treat with 2 performances and we hope that you can join us.
Finally, while most students do not have to fast according the age requirements, it is still something recommended. We are all called to strive for holiness. Giving something up during the week or for the duration of the season of Lent is a common practice. Meat on Friday’s is something we commonly abstain from (you may want to check out the KoC fish fry on Friday evenings). Nonetheless, let us strive to grow in holiness together that we may better understand the Paschal Mystery. St. Joseph, pray for us.
