Dear St. Joseph Families,
On Friday, we celebrated our 71st year of our existence as a school right here, in the heart of Broadmoor. We opened our doors on September 17th, 1951 thanks to the direction of Bishop Charles Greco and Fr. Joseph Gremillion. Most schools in those days started after Labor Day. This was the original plan for the school but the Sisters of Divine Providence, led by our first principal, Sr. Theonilla, were late arriving due to the train schedule. On the first day, after Fr. Gremillion drove the bus to pick up his students, the doors were open to 102 students.
We celebrate 71 years with Mass and we had many parents, grandparents, and alumni who were alongside our superintendent, Sr. Carol Shively, in attendance. Bishop Malone was our chief celebrant for the Mass and he was accompanied by our pastor, Fr. Matthew Long, and our new parochial vicar, Fr. Nicholas Duncan. Our bishop shared with our students the details of his amazing and recent visit to Rome. In turn, our students shared with him a piece of art created from the thumbprints of our k3-5th students and a spiritual bouquet from or middle schoolers. A most touching gift was our middle school choir, led by Mrs. Drinkard, sang “May the Lord Bless You and Keep You.” Due to the quality of their performance for the bishop and the pastor’s birthdays, the students are now invited to sing at the Chrism Mass this spring.
To cap off the celebration, our cheer squads put on a very loud and very entertaining pep rally. We are blessed to have so many parents in attendance to help us celebrate our students who are participating in our fall sports programs. Our Jets football teams, Lady Falcons volleyball team, and Lady Falcons basketball teams were all recognized. Congratulations to our 4th and 8th grade classes who showed the most school spirit that day! Happy anniversary St. Joseph! May the Lord bless us and keep us. St. Joseph, pray for us.
