Summer Reading

Summer Reading is required for all students entering 1st-8th grades. Students will complete the assignments over the summer break and return them in August during the first week of school. Please select your assignments based on the grade your child is entering in August 2024. Printed assignments can also be picked up in the school office.

Outreach Ministry

Our middle school is required to fulfill a set number of service hours for each grade, with a particular focus of preparing our eighth grade students for the Sacrament of Confirmation. Students also have the opportunity to participate in several fundraising activities through our school for the benefit of different charitable organizations within our local community suchs as: Mary’s House, St. Vincent dePaul Society, and Providence House. We also allow for our families to reflect the same calling of commitment to Christian service by participating in several service activities through our Parent Teacher Organization with activities that benefit our students and school community throughout the school year.

Extracurricular

St. Joseph Catholic School values the education of the total child and is committed to affording our parents the opportunity to expose their children to extracurricular activities that will enhance their overall development and growth as persons. We currently offer the following activities through our After-School Academy:

Guitar – is offered once a week (Monday through Thursday) at a cost of $30.00 per private lesson (30 minutes). Mr. Joseph Bonds, a St. Joseph Church parishioner, teaches the classes. He is classically trained and has performed in Master Classes under Christopher Parkening (Columbia Artists), Sharon Isbin (Juilliard School), Andrew York (Los Angeles Guitar Quartet) and Benjamin Verdery (Yale University). Mr. Bonds is a retired English teacher. Students in the third grade or higher can sign up for these classes. Younger students may be able to sign up at Mr. Bond’s discretion.

Piano – is offered once a week on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday at a cost of $30.00 per private lesson (30 minutes). Ms. Lisa Daye is a local professional pianist, with over 13 years of experience as a music teacher for the Talented Arts Division of Caddo Parish Schools. Her music education includes 8 years of piano, voice, and music theory through the Royal Conservatory of Canada. Ms. Daye greatly enjoys teaching children how to interpret the “story” of the musical piece, and strongly believes in the importance of mutual respect as the foundation for a productive teacher/student relationship.

Athletics

St. Joseph students are given the opportunity to be formed in the field of athletic competition. Our Falcons are expected to maintain a high standard of academic success in order to participate in such optional activities. Students who fail to do so will be put on academic probation. Students are able to participate in the different activities once athletic fees have been paid.

Cheerleading

Cheerleading is available beginning in 2nd grade to all girls. 2nd and 3rd grade girls participate on Pep Squad. 4th and 5th grade girls participate on Junior Varsity. 6th, 7th, and 8th grade participate on Varsity. The squads practice weekly, and cheer at basketball and football games. They, also, perform at the fall and spring pep rally.

Jets Football

Jets Football is an organization of the local private schools for 2nd -8th grade boys. The organization was created to allow students at small schools to be able to compete in large team sports. The goal of the Jets Football organization is to teach young men the game of football and the fun and enjoyment it can bring. Basketball

Junior High boys and girls are able to participate in basketball this year. Due to indoor restrictions due to COVID-19 mitigation, we take special care in ensuring that player safety is top priority. SJS competes against other schools in the local private school association.

Volleyball

Volleyball is open to all middle school girls. We have partnered with Twin City Volleyball to offer a Fall and Spring season where the girls compete against other club teams and local schools.

Tennis

Boys and Girls in grades 1-8 may compete on the SJS tennis team. Due to the natural social distancing that occurs in the sport, the tennis teams will compete in both the fall and spring seasons, allowing for more opportunity to participate in sports. SJS students are able to compete in both singles and doubles competition.

Clubs

Running Club

Running cub is offered weekly for students in 2nd-8th grade. Students run laps each week, and earn rewards each time they run a mile. Elementary students also have the opportunity to participate in Kids on the Run, a local running event that hosts runs for school age children. Cub Scouts (Pack 3)

Open to boys in grades 1st through 5th. For more information about Cub Scouts, e-mail Pack Leader.

KJOE Team

Students at St. Joseph Catholic School’s in-house television station write and deliver the news on a daily basis. Open to any middle school student.

National Elementary Honor Society

Open to 4th and 5th grade students who have met honor society requirements evaluated on the basis of leadership, service, citizenship, character, and academics.

National Junior Honor Society

Open to 8th grade students who have a 3.75 cumulative GPA in core subjects and are evaluated on the basis of leadership, service, citizenship and character.

Student Council

StuCo is open to 5th-8th grade students. Students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade may run for positions on the executive council (President, Vice President, Treasurer, Historian, Secretary). Each grade also elects two representatives. The members of the student council participate in various activities and fundraisers to benefit the school. They, also, attend the Louisiana Student Council Association Conference each year.

Altar Servers

Open to Catholic students, grades 5th through 8th grade. Students may sign up to serve at weekly Masses as well as on the weekend. Students may be asked to serve additional liturgies such as funerals when such a need arises.

Mini Vinnies

SJS pilots “Mini Vinnie” in Diocese of Shreveport

St. Joseph School and the Society of St. Vincent de Paul are excited to announce the formation of the first Youth Conference in the Diocese of Shreveport. Adult members of the International Society are called Vincentians, and the SJS Conference will be called “Mini Vinnies.” Under the model of “faith in action,” the goal of the Mini Vinnies will be to assist in serving the poor and those in need in our community.

Since 1833, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul has been one of the most important Catholic outreach ministries. Working closely with the Shreveport Diocesan Council of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, the Mini Vinnies will focus on the components of See, Think, Do.

See: becoming aware of the needs of our neighbors;
Think: be creative in finding solutions to help with those needs; and
Do: putting our faith in action through hands-on service projects.

Just as Mini Vinnie Conferences in both the United States and around the world have successfully served the poor in their own areas, we are excited to see how the St. Joseph School Mini Vinnies will bring Christ to the poor through service to those in need here in the Shreveport-Bossier City area.
