Dear St. Joseph Families,

We hope that everyone had a wonderful Fall Break! As said recently, this is certainly a well- earned break. What a busy October we’ve already had- Falcon Fest, School Rosary, Hispanic Heritage Program- and it was the end of the 9 Weeks! We hope that everyone has had the necessary rest in order to switch gears and get ready for a new 9 weeks.

With a new 9 weeks in mind, let us be mindful of a fresh start to either improve or to keep a good thing going. One thing we do not wish to fall into is a what is known as a sophomore slump. For those unfamiliar with the expression, the term normally refers to one’s second year in a program such as sports. Individuals often feel they have proven themselves and now feel as though they can take a break or slack off. I strongly encourage otherwise for the 2nd 9 weeks.

Again, we are called to pursue excellence. Christ himself states in Matthew 5, “Be perfect as your heavenly father is perfect.” Will we be perfect? Only through the grace and mercy of God. Will he bless the work of our hands if we make every effort to excel? Surely. That is why our motto is to academic excellence surrounded by faith. We pursue excellence because it is our calling.

Excellence looks different for every child. It does not always mean that every child, every quarter will achieve straight A’s. It is not always possible to be perfect in all things. There are ways to support students who are seeking such excellence and the end result may be straight B’s. Let’s be ok with that- IF we know there was an honest pursuit. Meet with a teacher to see what was lacking. Work with a tutor and get the support needed. Have dedicated homework and study time at home. Review the Wednesday folders. Excellence can only be achieved with proper support. St. Joseph, pray for us.
