Dear St. Joseph Families,

If you happened to go to Mass this past weekend at St. Joseph Catholic Church, you may have heard our priests share a few words on behalf of Bishop Malone. It is no secret that the situation in and around Israel is becoming more and more dire.

The situation has led to the loss of innocent human lives, the greatest of all tragedies. In praying for peace in Israel, Bishop Malone has asked that tomorrow, October 17th, be observed as a day of prayer and fasting for peace. It may be wise to explain to children of appropriate age why we would perform such offerings. Prayer is something we do to communicate with God. No doubt peace in our world and the preservation of human life are important intentions. Fasting is done for 3 reasons- it brings about humility, it is a form of penance for sin, and it can bring us closer to God in prayer. Let us do so for these intentions. Below, you will find a prayer written by Pope St. John Paul II for peace. St. Joseph, pray for us.

Lord Jesus Christ, Who is called the Prince of Peace, Who is Yourself our peace and reconciliation, Who so often said, “Peace to you,” grant us peace. Make all men and women witnesses of truth, justice, and brotherly love. l Banish from their hearts whatever might endanger peace. Enlighten our rulers that they may guarantee and defend the great gift of peace. May all peoples on the earth become as brothers and sisters. May longed for peace blossom forth and reign always over us all. Amen.
