Dear SJS Families,

Advent Season is upon us. Often, when we think of Advent, we think of a time where the clock is ticking to get Christmas shopping done. We have to decorate the house, the yard, take pictures, go to a lights show or attend parties. By the time we get to Christmas, unfortunately, we are “Christmas’d Out.” That is why it is important for us to reflect on what Avdent is about.

In it’s history, it has been a time of hopeful expectation, and a time of waiting for the Lord. It is during this time that we should actually slow down and focus on what is truly important- not the sales, not the decorations, but the Christ child. It is a time where we ought to develop patience so that we may enjoy the celebration more fully.

How can we prepare as a community? Again, the focus is on what is important. For our students, it is a time to block out distractions and focus on academics. This is what is most important for their calling since there are only 3 weeks left to the semester. Obviously, it is a time of prayer. When not studying for exams, maybe take time to read Scriptures that speak of the coming of Christ becoming man. Take time every night to do so. Finally, don’t be afraid of treating this season like Lent where we do something extra for others. Let’s not do it for the feeling or a pat on the back, but because it is pleasing to God.
